Really?

The breathless headline on my internet feed demanded attention:

“New Book Reveals that Queen Disapproved of Megan White Wedding Dress.”

Really? With all that’s going on in the world, I’m supposed to care about some royal’s opinion of a friggin’ dress? Not only that, but an opinion from years and years ago?

I know we live in a celebrity-powered culture, and that somehow I or others are encouraged to stick our noses in the lives of the rich and famous. But the white wedding dress? Really?

Let’s put aside for a moment the hidebound idea that a woman must be a virgin to wear a white wedding dress. Let’s not discuss whether the Queen–or any mother–should have a say in what her daughter-in-law chooses to wear on the wedding day. Let’s not even talk about the arrogance of asserting that virginity should be the measure of a woman.

Let’s ask the real question: Why the hell should I care? Why do you come at me with this trivia, bro? In fact, this doesn’t even rise to the level of trivia.

Hey, maybe there’s a reason Queen Liz II never mentioned this in any interview. Why no one in the Palace hinted at it during the wedding. Why we’re just hearing about it now.

I’m sure QEII probably made some comment about the white dress in passing. She was born in 1927, for heaven’s sake. They thought those kind of things back then. Are we, in 2022, supposed to feel superior to her because we have more enlightened ideas?

No. Let’s leave poor Liz alone. She did the best she could during a difficult time. I don’t care one rotten carrot what she thought of Megan’s dress. For that matter, I don’t much worry about the English Royal family, even though I am distantly related to them.

I’m more worried about the Rams. They’re 2-1 but the last two games have been sloppy. I got a feeling we’re in for a rocky season.

Not that it will make a difference in my life. Tra la, Tra lay.
