A Prayer for My Country

This is the song I hope to sing at Mass the day after July 4th.

A Prayer for My Country

Intro:

We live in troubled times, Lord

We talk in bitter rhymes, Lord

We argue and we threaten and we fight.

Yet after all these years I find

Our lives are still intertwined

This is my prayer for my country, Lord, tonight.

  1. May we walk tall and strong

And not be tempted by the wrong

May we always speak freely and be true

May we work hard each day

And be joyous in our play

And may we always trust in You, Lord.

1st Bridge

And when our politicians try

To make us hate the other side

And say that they’re not like us at all

While they try to ignite us

May we remember what unites us

And that our differences can be very small.

2. Our land has many faces

Many faiths and many races

We’re all part of the Great American Stew, Lord

So let hatred have no part

Of any corner of our hearts

And let us always trust in You, Lord.

2nd Bridge:

Let good people who come to our shores

Find a home forever more

Let us welcome the stranger

As You taught us to do, Lord

Go to war only when we must

And make peace when it is just

Love our neighbor so we may stay true to You, Lord

Last Verse:

At the end of the day

Let us bow our heads to pray

May we worship as our hearts bid us to do, Lord

May we always be free

From any one man’s tyranny

Oh, watch over the Red, White and Blue, Lord

And may we always

Trust in You

You can disagree with any sentiment in that song. But instead of asking me questions, perhaps you’d better ask yourself.
